What Makes IKEA Kitchen Installation Different
IKEA's METOD kitchen system is one of the most popular kitchen ranges in the UK, combining strong design options with competitive unit prices. However, IKEA kitchens arrive in flat-pack form — the carcasses must be assembled on site before they can be positioned, levelled and fixed. This is the key difference between fitting an IKEA kitchen and fitting a pre-assembled rigid kitchen from Howdens, Wren or Magnet.
On-site assembly is not particularly difficult for an experienced fitter, but it takes time. Assembling the carcasses for a medium kitchen of 15–18 units typically takes a full day before the fitting programme proper can begin. This assembly day is why IKEA installation costs more per kitchen, and why quotes for IKEA jobs should reflect the additional time required.
IKEA's METOD system also uses its own wall unit hanging rail — a continuous aluminium rail fixed to the wall on which wall units are hung and adjusted. This is a different process from the individual fixing brackets used by most other brands. A fitter familiar with the SEKTION rail system will set it up correctly first time. A fitter encountering it for the first time may struggle with levelling and unit spacing.
IKEA Kitchen Fitting Cost Breakdown
The following estimates cover fitting labour only in Coventry and Warwickshire, based on a day rate of approximately £350. They do not include worktop supply, plumbing, electrical work, or appliance connection.
A small IKEA METOD kitchen of 8–12 units — typically a galley or simple L-shape — takes 4–5 days to fit including assembly. At £350/day, this represents a fitting cost of £1,400–£1,750. Add a laminate worktop at £200–£400 and you are looking at a total fitting and worktop cost of £1,600–£2,150. Including a quartz worktop takes this to £2,500–£3,750.
A medium IKEA kitchen of 13–20 units takes 5–7 days to fit. At £350/day, this is £1,750–£2,450 for fitting. A laminate worktop adds £250–£500, giving a fitting and worktop total of £2,000–£2,950. With quartz, the total rises to £3,000–£4,800.
A large IKEA kitchen of 21 or more units, particularly those with islands, pantry units or complex layouts, can take 7–12 days. Fitting costs at £350/day range from £2,450 to £4,200. Add worktop costs — which on a large kitchen with an island can be considerable — and total fitting and worktop costs of £4,000–£7,500 are realistic.
What Is and Is Not Included in These Figures
The fitting costs above cover: flat-pack carcass assembly, levelling and fixing of all base and wall units, IKEA wall rail installation, door hanging and adjustment, drawer front fitting and alignment, plinth fitting, cornice and pelmet (if included in the kitchen purchase), and snagging. A laminate or timber worktop cut and fit by the fitter is priced separately as noted above.
Not included: plumbing (first-fix and second-fix), electrical work (moving sockets, adding under-cabinet lighting, cooker circuits), gas connection, stone or quartz worktop supply and fabrication (quoted separately by the fabricator), appliance supply, tiling, or decoration. These must be budgeted for separately.
IKEA's Own Installation Service vs Independent Fitters
IKEA offers a home installation service through TaskRabbit in some areas. The cost is typically higher than using an experienced independent fitter, and scheduling can be more restricted. The quality of TaskRabbit installers varies considerably — they are not kitchen specialists in the same way that a trade kitchen fitter with 20–30 years of experience is.
An experienced independent fitter who knows the METOD system will work more efficiently, produce better alignment and finish, and be more straightforward to contact if a snagging item needs attention after completion. The direct accountability of an independent fitter is a significant advantage over a platform-matched installation service.

Having an IKEA kitchen professionally fitted typically costs £2,200–£5,500 in the UK depending on kitchen size. A small IKEA METOD kitchen (8–12 units) costs approximately £2,200–£3,200 to fit. A medium kitchen (13–20 units) costs £3,000–£4,800. A large kitchen (21+ units) costs £4,500–£7,500. These figures cover fitting labour only — add worktops, plumbing and electrical costs for your total project budget.
IKEA METOD kitchens arrive in flat-pack form and require on-site carcass assembly before the units can be positioned and fitted. This assembly stage adds 1–2 days to the programme compared to pre-assembled rigid kitchens (Howdens, Wren, Magnet). More days means a higher total fitting cost at the same day rate.
Any experienced kitchen fitter can install an IKEA METOD kitchen, but IKEA-specific experience matters. The carcass assembly process, IKEA's SEKTION rail system for wall units, and the IKEA-specific plinth and cornice profiles require familiarity. A fitter who has previously installed METOD kitchens will work more efficiently and produce a better result.
IKEA offers a home installation service through a third-party provider. This service can be convenient but is often more expensive than using an experienced independent fitter, and scheduling can be inflexible. Independent fitters typically offer faster availability, more direct communication, and a more personalised service.
A small IKEA METOD kitchen takes 4–5 days (including carcass assembly). A medium kitchen takes 5–7 days. A large kitchen takes 7–12 days. These estimates are longer than equivalent rigid-carcass kitchens because of the flat-pack assembly stage. A pre-installation survey will give you a precise timeline for your specific kitchen.
