Flooring and Tiling as Part of Your Kitchen Project

Having one team handle both the kitchen installation and the flooring means better co-ordination, a single point of contact and — in most cases — a smoother project overall. When we lay the flooring before the cabinets go in, the base units sit on top of it and the plinth drops down to floor level as designed. When we tile the splashback after the worktops are fitted, we can cut accurately to the worktop edge and wall unit soffit without relying on another contractor to co-ordinate with the rest of the installation.

This is an optional service and is subject to availability. If you would like flooring or tiling included in your project, raise it at the survey stage — we can assess the scope and include it in your quote.

Floor Tiles — Porcelain and Ceramic

Porcelain and ceramic floor tiles are the most popular choice for kitchen floors, and with good reason. They are durable, easy to clean and available in an enormous range of sizes, finishes and patterns. We lay both standard ceramic tiles and the larger-format porcelain tiles that have become popular in recent years.

Preparation is key to a successful tiled floor. The subfloor must be level to within the manufacturer's tolerance — typically 3 mm over 3 m — and any flexible boards must be overlaid with a suitable tile backer or uncoupling membrane. We assess the subfloor condition at the survey and advise on any preparation needed. Adhesive specification, grout joint width and tile layout are all confirmed with you before we start.

LVT and Laminate Flooring

Luxury vinyl tile and laminate flooring are both popular in kitchens because they are warm underfoot, easy to maintain and available in a wide range of wood and stone effects. LVT is fully waterproof and can be laid in any direction; laminate needs an expansion gap and is not suitable directly in front of a dishwasher or sink unless a waterproof grade is specified.

Both products are laid as floating floors on top of the existing subfloor, with the appropriate underlay for comfort and sound reduction. We cut around door architraves and fit the required expansion profiles at doorways and changes of floor level.

Wall Tiles and Splashbacks

Wall tiling in a kitchen is most commonly done in the splashback area — the section of wall between the worktop and the bottom of the wall units. We also tile full-height feature walls, chimney breast sections and utility walls where specified. Tiles are set out from a level datum with consistent joint widths and grouted in the specified colour. Cut edges at the perimeter are finished with the appropriate trim profile or left as a clean scribed edge where the design calls for it.

If you are considering a patterned tile or a book-matched large-format tile, let us know at the survey stage so we can allow additional time for the set-out planning.

Flooring & Tiling (Optional) — Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the flooring type and the design. In most cases we recommend laying floor tiles before the cabinets, with the plinth dropping to floor level. LVT and laminate are often laid after cabinets, running under the plinth. We confirm the correct sequence at the survey.

Yes, subject to the wall being in a suitable condition. Full-height wall tiling requires a flat, stable substrate. Where this is not present we can advise on preparation options.

Electric underfloor heating mats are a relatively straightforward addition before tiling. The mat must be installed and electrically connected before the floor adhesive goes down. We can include this in the scope if arranged in advance.

Flooring and tiling require additional time and specialist materials beyond the standard kitchen installation. We schedule this work separately to ensure quality is maintained. Confirming it at the survey stage allows us to plan accordingly.
