How Pull-Out Bins Work

A pull-out bin unit consists of one or more bin containers mounted on a sliding frame inside a dedicated base cabinet. The door of the unit is either connected to the bin frame (so opening the door pulls out the bin automatically) or opens separately while the bin slides independently. Systems with door-linked pull-out action are the most popular as they require only one hand to operate.

Sizing and Cabinet Requirements

Pull-out bin systems are available in a range of widths — typically 300mm, 400mm, 450mm and 600mm. The system must be specified to match the available cabinet width. Some systems fit inside a single-door base unit; others require a wider two-door cabinet.

Door-linked systems, where opening the cabinet door automatically pulls the bin frame out, are the most convenient for everyday use but need precise fixing between the door and the bin frame — if this connection is even slightly misaligned, the door can bind or the bin can drag on the cabinet sides, so this is worth checking carefully during snagging.

Can a Pull-Out Bin Go Under the Sink?

It can, but plumbing pipework under the sink often reduces the usable width, so a bin system for this position needs to be chosen to fit around the pipe runs — measure the actual clear space with pipework in place, not just the cabinet's nominal width.
