How Are Stone Worktops Measured and Fitted?

Stone worktops are measured by templating — a specialist fabricator visits after base units are installed, creates a precise template, and takes it to their workshop where the stone is cut. The fitted worktop is returned and installed 5–10 working days later.

Why Templating Is Necessary

Stone worktops — whether granite, quartz, or marble — cannot be measured from drawings alone. Every kitchen has slight variations in wall angles, unit positions, and dimensions that only become apparent once the base units are installed. Templating is the process of creating a precise, physical template of the worktop area so that the stone slab can be cut exactly to fit. The template accounts for every corner angle, appliance cut-out, sink position, and wall scribe. Without accurate templating, even an expensive stone worktop will have visible gaps or joints that do not close cleanly.

The Templating Visit — What Happens

Once all base units are installed and perfectly levelled, the stone fabricator visits the property. Using either rigid cardboard templates or a digital laser templating system, they measure every surface precisely, including upstands, windowsill returns, and any curved walls. Sink and hob cut-outs are marked. The template is then taken back to the fabricator's workshop where computer-controlled machinery cuts the stone slab to the exact specification. Edge profiles are applied, and any polishing is completed before the worktop returns for installation.

Lead Times and Programme Planning

The standard lead time between templating and installation is 5–10 working days, though premium or less common stone types may take longer. This gap must be planned into the overall kitchen programme. At Install My Kitchen, we advise clients to co-ordinate the templating visit at the end of the base unit installation, so the plumber can connect the sink immediately once the stone arrives. Planning this sequence carefully avoids leaving the kitchen without a working sink for longer than necessary.

Related Questions

No — stone worktops must be templated after base units are installed. Even small discrepancies between drawings and actual unit positions would result in a poorly fitting stone top. Templating is always done on the installed units.

A templating visit typically takes 1–2 hours depending on the complexity and size of the kitchen. Kitchens with curved walls, island units, or complex corner arrangements take longer than straightforward linear layouts.

Templating is arranged by the stone fabricator, not the kitchen fitter. You should have your fabricator booked and ready before installation begins so they can visit as soon as the base units are complete.

In most cases, a temporary worktop is not fitted during the wait. The kitchen is not fully functional during this period. We advise planning for up to two weeks without a complete kitchen when stone worktops are part of your project.
